2. Tomatoes: Unfortunately, this delicious and healthful fruit is one of the foods that cause heartburn. Avoid foods that contain tomatoes or tomato-based products, such as ketchup, pizza with tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, and chili.
3. Peppermint: You’ll be amazed to know that peppermint is an acid reflux trigger, despite its reputation for calming the stomach. Peppermint and spearmint can irritate the digestive tract and cause acid reflux.
4. Alcohol: People with GERD are known to be negatively affected by all types of alcohol, including beer, wine, and spirits. Furthermore, if you prefer to drink alcohol while dealing with GERD, you should limit yourself to one drink at a time and avoid drinking shortly before bedtime, since you may develop acid reflux during the night.
5. Spicy Foods: Spicy foods are one of the most obvious foods that cause heartburn. A molecule called capsaicin is responsible for the spiciness is a strong acid reflux risk factor. The hotness of capsaicin can also irritate your esophagus, exacerbating any heartburn symptoms.
6. Chocolate: One of the most prevalent foods that cause acid reflux is chocolate. According to research, chocolate induces intestinal cells to release serotonin, which relaxes the esophageal sphincter and allows stomach acid to flow upwards. Chocolate is also acidic, which can irritate your stomach and esophagus, and it contains caffeine, which is another risk factor for GERD.
7. Carbonated Beverages: Carbonated beverages are another major cause of acid reflux. This includes sodas, carbonated water, carbonated energy drinks, carbonated alcoholic drinks, and carbonated juices. These drinks can exacerbate the symptoms of GERD or an acid reflux attack.
