When acid from the stomach escapes back into the esophagus it creates this very unpleasant burning sensation in the center of your chest. During pregnancy, your body produces progesterone that causes the valve between your stomach and your esophagus to relax. Because of this, some acid flows back up (acid reflux) into the esophagus and irritates the lining, creating heartburn.
